Kimpton Glover Park Hotel Washington DC

On my recent trip to DC, I did a little bit of Hotel-hopping to make the most of my time in the Capitol and experience various neighborhoods. I had a photography tour scheduled for early Sunday morning at the National Cathedral, so I looked for a Kimpton Hotel close by. If you follow my blog, you know how much I love Kimpton Hotels and try to stay there any chance I get. Lucky me, I found one just down the street: The Kimpton Glover Park Hotel

Welcome to the Kimpton Glover Park Hotel

I was coming from Alexandria and had two huge pieces of luggage. Don’t judge; the husband decided to schlepp 8 bottles of craft beer from San Diego to DC, so one suitcase was practically full with beer! So I decided to splurge on an Uber instead of hauling half a brewery via public transport.

When I walked in, I instantly fell in love with the magical bookcase in the lobby. When I pointed it out to the front desk staff, they told me, I could borrow any book I liked while I stayed there. Sweet, right? Their selection is rather eclectic and all over the place. My theory is that they selected books that would fit the color scheme of the bookshelf, not necessarily because they like the books or authors.

Check-in was swift, friendly and efficient. The front desk staff was friendly, warm, and welcoming to me. They also told me about some nice places in the area to check out for food and drinks and their recommendations were spot on.

Our Room at the Kimpton Glover Park Hotel

Compared to the other Kimpton hotels I have stayed at, the Kimpton Glover Park Hotel is a bit more typical for your hotel room. I loved the modern, sleek, but warm design of the room. The crisp white sheets and the grey-washed wood furniture gives the room a modern, Scandinavian feel to it. I had a beautiful view of Washington DC. I could see the Capitol and Washington Monument. Very beautiful, especially at night, but impossible to photograph due to the mosquito screen.

On our second day, the husband and I were treated to a tasty cheese and cold cuts platter, fruit, and a lovely bottle of wine. Kimpton really loves to spoil their guests and make you feel welcome.

Let’s talk about beds guys! A Hotel’s main job is, to provide you a comfy spot to rest your head. And the Glover Park Hotel does a great job. The husband and I only have a queen sized bed at home, so sprawling out in a King always feels luxurious. But I think the secret of why I slept like a queen in this hotel was the pillow. In soooo many hotels, you get those flimsy pillows. One is too low and if you use two, it feels as if your chin is pressed against your chest. The pillows at the Glover Park Hotel were perfect.

Location and Things To Do Nearby

Located directly across the street from the Russian embassy, the Kimpton Glover Park Hotel is a great choice if you want to explore the Northeastern part of DC. The closest Metro Stop is Woodley Park. It is too far to walk, but you can either just hop on a bus to get down there or take advantage of the Hotel’s free shuttle service to take you down to the Metro. If you like to be in walking distance to everything, I don’t think this is the Hotel for you, but there are quite a few cool spots nearby that you can reach quickly via bus or Uber and that are much more easily accessible than if you stay closer to the tourist center of DC.

National Cathedral:

The National Cathedral is definitely worth a visit. It is a truly majestic building and if you go up to the tower, you can see pretty much all of DC. The stained glass windows look stunning and I really love that some of them have modern motives, like the one that was inspired by the moon landing and features an actual moon rock in its design.

Washington National Zoo:

I have to admit that I have not been to the National Zoo yet. It is definitely on my list of places to check out on my next trip to DC. If you are visiting Washington with your family, I highly recommend adding a Zoo visit to your itinerary, as it gives your kids a break from “boring” museums and some opportunity to burn up some energy by running around outdoors.

Restaurants to try nearby:

Dumplings and Beyond: Best Dumplings I have EVER had in the US. And I am spoiled. I practically lived on Dumplins for 6 months in China. Huge portions, cheap, and absolutely delish!

Old Europe: A German restaurant and the menu looks lovely. We didn’t eat there though because we had already had German food at a different restaurant.

Rocklands BBQ: I have to say, it smelled delicious, when we walked passed.

Adams Morgan:

Adams Morgan is the Hipster Place in DC. It is a quick bus ride from the hotel and there are some cool bars and restaurants on 18th street that are worth checking out. We had dinner at Sakuramen Ramen Bar and it was AMAZING. I love spicy food and usually order an 11 on a 1-10 scale at the Thai place. Here, I ordered a 7 and boy it was spicy.

After dinner, we walked around some more, had a beer or two in a few of the bars and had a good time. What I like is that there are bars and restaurants for many audiences. Some bars target the college kid crowd and others are a bit more refined or something in-between.

Georgetown:

Georgetown is such a sweet town. Take a walk along the canal and check out the cute shops on M Street. A must is a stop at Georgetown Cupcake, even if the line is out the door and wraps around the next block or two.

Casolare Restaurant

The Casolare Restaurant is the latest restaurant by award-winning Chef Schlow. His Italian creations will take you right to the central coast of Italy. The husband and I had breakfast there and I highly recommend you take advantage of the $1 Breakfast for two offer add-on when you book your hotel. I loved the design of the hotel, which was rustic modern. The beautiful tiles reminded me of a trip to Sorrento on the Amalfi coast a long time ago.
